🌺Walking home alone and feeling uneasy? Getting a weird vibe from a stranger on the bus? Many of us have been there. In a January 2018 survey of 1,000 women nationwide, 81 percent reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment, assault, or both in their lifetime.

🌺Thus, to empower our young girls and women, and to protect their self-dignity, IAP Mumbai celebrated Daughter’s Day (as a part of the IAP Child and Adolescent Health Care Week) by organising a SELF-DEFENSE session on 26th March 2024 at Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science, SNDT University, Santacruz by 14-year old Blue – belt champion in Taekwondo, Ms. Nyla Khan.
Nyla efficiently taught different techniques of self-defense to the 140 girl students and the teaching and non – teaching staff members present. The students were encouraged to volunteer and demonstrate various defending techniques. Nyla emphasised on the soft target points of the attacker’s body which can be used by girls to counter-attack. Thus, the self-defense session was truly an event “Of the Adolescents, By an Adolescent, for the Adolescents!!”

🌺Dr Nehal Shah and Dr Jagruti Sanghvi emphasized the role of regular exercise and good nutrition in maintaining physical and mental fitness, to face such a situation without panic. As they rightly say, ‘Self Defense is not a set of techniques, but it’s the state of mind that begins with the belief that you are worth defending.. ‘

🌺The entire session was coordinated by Dr Nehal Shah and Dr Jagruti Sanghvi on behalf of IAP Mumbai, along with Dr Bhavna Patel of Rotary Club of Bombay West.
